Horsham hockey on show at schools

THE Horsham Hockey Club is getting stuck into the hockey season early with a hockey roadshow and come and try day scheduled for February.
Hockey Victoria and Horsham Hockey Club coaches have been busy visiting six schools in Horsham to give them a taste of the sport.
The roadshows aim to encourage students to take the next step into the hockey world by signing up to the Hookin2Hockey Program.
Horsham Hockey Club promotions officer Launa Schilling said across Horsham the coaches had engaged with 450 students.
“We will be venturing further out with the roadshow heading to schools in Dimboola, Warracknabeal and Nhill in the following week,” she said.
“It’s a national program, coordinated through the state bodies as Hockey Victoria sends out a coach and we also provide one to assist on the days.”
Horsham Hockey Club is hosting a Come and Try Day on February 20 at the community oval on Dimboola Road.

Schilling said the day was for anybody, new and returning players to get out and have some fun.
“We will hopefully be able to get some new young and budding hockey players out of these events,” she said.
“They get a taster at the schools, then have more fun at our Come and Try Day before hopefully joining our Hookin2Hockey program.
“The program improves skills through fun games and is for any skill level for children under 12-years-old.”
Schilling said the Hookin2Hockey program ran for seven weeks and interested players could then proceed to the Stick2Hockey program.
“The Stick2Hockey program runs the length of the season and players also have the chance to join the Under 12s Black Hawkes team which follows the association games,” she said.
“Last year we had nearly 70 children at the Come and Try Day and around 38 joined Hookin2Hockey so we hope to get that many involved again.
“There are incentives to join up with the first five to sign up to the program getting a hat, drink bottle and more.”

Schilling said the club was still seeking players for Under 12s, Under 16s, Women and Open Grades for the coming season.
“It’s a good chance for people to try the sport and if they enjoy it they can join up,” she said.
“It’s also lots of fun if people bring along their friends and all give it a go together.”
The Wimmera Hockey Association season is set to begin in April.
