THE Horsham Aquatic Centre is set to be run by YMCA Victoria for the coming three years after being awarded the contract.

Horsham Rural City Council approved the tender at the meeting on March 28 with the contract sum of $825,863.63.

The contract has the option to extend for two three-year terms after 2025.

The current contract initially expired in June 2020, the council applied for an extension to extend the contract due to COVID-19.

Councillor Les Power said the YMCA was a fantastic component of the township of Horsham.

“Where would we be in Horsham if we didn’t have the Horsham Aquatic Centre,” he said.

“It is one thing that has flourished in Horsham over the last 10 to 12 years since it has been there.

“Summer has just gone and I was lucky enough at different times to see numerous people down there, one fantastic day was the Horsham school swimming sports, it was a prime example of how our outdoor pool can be used and used more often.”

YMCA Victoria executive general manager recreation Alexandra Ash said the Y was committed to the Horsham community, to support as many locals from all ages and stages of life to be more active more often.

“Horsham locals can look forward to some exciting developments at Horsham Aquatic Centre including expanded programs, new gym equipment and the first Wibit Adventure zone with inflatable obstacles for the region,” she said.

Horsham Rural City Council mayor Robyn Gulline said the aquatic centre was an important facility for the Horsham community and was pleased that a decision had been made on the facility’s future management.

“The centre is much more than a place to swim. It’s a meeting point where you can attend a wide range of health and wellbeing classes, have a fitness assessment, undertake a program, stay for tea and coffee and connect with the community.

“We’re confident that YMCA Victoria will continue to deliver a high standard of service and innovation at the aquatic centre that will provide the best outcome for our community.

“As the YMCA is already operating these facilities there will be no transition impact on our users.”
