Laycocks dominate gold tees

The day saw 28 men compete and eight ladies play their stableford round with the mens event sponsored by Tim Bryce and Kym Stepney.

Gold tees play sees players tee off from adjusted distances from the normal tee boxes with handicaps adjusted accordingly to accommodate for the shorter distances on some holes.

The V Par event saw son and father duo Rohan and Ross Laycock finish first and second in the A Grade with Rohan, playing off a +1 handicap) winning the day finishing +1, while Ross (4) followed closely behind with -1 to finish runner-up on a countback.

B Grade winner was Nick Germano (17) who took to the new format and finish +1 to win by one shot from Dave Flannery on square.

Other good scores came from captain Ash Purdue -1, Kym Stepney -2 and Brett Allott -2.

In the ladies stableford event, Karen Germano (20) top a good day for the Germano family to score 35 points and finish ahead of runner-up Cindy Marsh (19) on 31 points.

Nearest the pins second shot ninth hole was taken out by Rohan Laycock. On the fifth hole was Kaye Picken, on the seventh was John Barbetti and Cindy Marsh and on the 13th hole, Ash Purdue was closest.

Last Thursday’s Palace Hotel Meal Run saw Derek Picken score 20 points to win the front nine holes and Ryan McKenzie score 21 points to claim the back nine holes.

Overall winner over 18 holes was McKenzie with 38 points.

Nearest the pins were Wayne Dovaston on the seventh hole and Derek Picken on the 13th hole.

Tomorrow’s event will be the June monthly medal with Wayne George and Bernie Naylor on the draw.

Last Sunday at Kaniva, the Wimmera Pennant Finals were played with Warracknabeal making its way to the grand final after claiming a semi-final win earlier in the day.

The semi-final saw Warrack defeat Edenhope 4/1. Ryan McKenzie won 5/3, Dean Gunn lost 7/6, Ryan Smith won 2/1, Jake Jess won 4/2 and Lachie Stewart won 4/2.

In the other semi-final Nhill def Natimuk 3/2 which set up a grand final between Warracknabeal and Nhill.

The result saw Nhill claim the pennant final in a closely fought contest winning 3/2.

Ryan McKenzie lost 5/3, Ryan Smith lost 3/2, Jake Jess won 4/3, Lachie Stewart lost 3/2 and Brenton Cheney won 3/1.

Congratulations to all players on a very successful and enjoyable pennant season and a special thank you to Brenton Cheney in his first season as Team Manager/Captain, very well led Brenton and a flag could be just around the corner.
