A Mum's World with Yolande Grosser: Hit the books

We country folk are flat out, aren’t we? Last weekend we had the Spring Garden Festival, ‘Godspell’, the Rotary East Art Show and Operation 19:14 – that’s my calendar alone.

There are Agricultural Shows, Country Race Meetings, festivals and special events in our unique towns all over the map.

This coming weekend the Chaplaincy Book Fair will be added to the mix again, as Horsham College students and the Chaplaincy Committee pull out all the stops, and the books – categorised and ready to buy for $1 each from Maroske Hall – cash only.

Unlike the trouble we had dealing with traffic in Melbourne this weekend, when we went to watch our eldest daughter in a musical, we will enjoy the country style of pulling up right out the front to support our community fundraisers.

It does look like at least two of my most reliable volunteers are tied up elsewhere though this coming weekend – my children have cultivated very busy lives so I can’t always lock them in anymore.

Katianna cannot come home to help as she will be performing in her final weekend of ‘Urinetown’ shows, so she’s out for packing away books.

Youngest daughter Tiani has a Saturday clinic and an assessment in waxing then an optional spray tan course, so I’ve no chance of roping her in.

I am still holding out hope for Yasinta to make it home to help.

The fact that we are holding her Mini hostage - complete with new second hand engine and gassed up air conditioning – may be a drawcard.

I think she will be keen to get it back because she’s been driving our old family Voyager, which looks like a van and seems to frequently have a flat battery.

Yasinta was sick with a cold when we left her in Melbourne Sunday morning though, so I’m praying for a fast recovery with ulterior motives.

My husband really doesn’t get much choice about whether he volunteers to help or not.

I need him up in the back of the Wastebusters truck stacking tatty books as they are passed up by the box full after the event, or on a trolley moving good, heavy, boxed books back into storage.

Kym needs to be in Adelaide most of the week for work, then he’s hoping to slot in a ride with a mate before coming home for Book Fair duty.

He’ll need to high tail it to stay in my good books.

When we finish packing and tidying Maroske Hall, we have the honour of setting up the tables for the Year 12 exams, which start one week from today.

Spare a thought for all the families supporting a soon to be examined student – it’s a lot of pressure they are under from every direction.

need to hit the books!
