THE Horsham Demons A Grade netballers played a strong, consistent game against the Horsham Saints on ANZAC Day.

Round two of the Wimmera Football Netball League saw the two Horsham sides face off in the traditional clash on April 25 at City Oval.

The Demons held a slight lead from the first whistle but it was tough going down the court with Saints contesting every pass.

In the second quarter, the home team used their speed to secure a 12 goal lead going into the halftime break.

Although the Saints outscored the Demons in the third quarter, the Demons were too far in front and were able to capitalise on their opportunities to score in the final quarter.

The final score was Horsham Demons 54 goals to Horsham Saints 36 goals.

Horsham Demons A Grade coach Tiffany Hier said the team was excited for their first game of the season.

“It was tough in that first round not being able to play the A Grade but today was a great hitout,” she said.

“Against Horsham Saints you know it’s always going to be a quality game, good opposition and it was good to be back out there.”

Hier said she was happy with the performance of the whole team.

“My highlight was Imogen Worthy, it's her first A Grade game and she just killed it, she was really good, as well as Grace Manserra, they’re both 16 years old and they dominated their positions,” she said.

“It was great to see our old faithful in Jedda (Heard), Georgia (Hiscock) and Romi (Miller) in the defence line, they held up their end and really were very strong for us.

“Georgie Carberry played an amazing game and that’s her first game in goal attack for quite a while so she really stepped up and matured as a netballer and was impressive.”

Hier said going forward the team would need to work on their strength in the attacking end.

“We had some great passages of play but we need to get better; we still have a lot of work to do,” she said.

“It was a great competition and is always played in a great spirit which is what the ANZAC game is all about.”

Horsham Saints A Grade coach Jess Cannane said the team started well.

“We didn’t really know what we were going to get with Horsham being a young side,” she said.

“We were hoping that a little bit of senior experience might have got us over the line but they were way too skilful and way too fast for us.

“We probably stuck with them for the first half and then it just blew out a little bit.”

Cannane said Elly Barnett played an amazing game in goal defence.

“We managed to get a couple of juniors who have only played one or two senior games in Jorja Clode and Sophie Taylor and they did really well,” she said.

Cannane said it was a significant game for some juniors who were able to set foot on the court in a senior game and Barnett who played her 150th game.

“We can take some positives out of this game and move forward to round three,” she said.

“We’ve got Ararat at home so that will be nice, we will be back in the stadium, we’re a little bit more comfortable in there and to get out of the weather.

“We have a little bit of work to do, a little bit of recovery and then we’ll go from there.”
