Colouring competition to celebrate town's new mural
A new mural now brightens the outside wall of Rainbow Bakery, marking the end of a long-running idea that the business has been planning for years.

A new mural now brightens the outside wall of Rainbow Bakery, marking the end of a long-running idea that the business has been planning for years.
Local artist Belinda Eckermann painted the work in 2025, and the mural spotlights rare and threatened butterflies and sun-moths found in Victoria’s Big Desert and the lakes and grasslands of the state’s north-west.
The artwork highlights species such as the Fiery Jewel, Southern Purple Azure, Satin Azure, and Mallee Azure, and it also features grass-dependent species such as the Small Orange-spotted Sun-moth, Reddish-orange Sun-moth, and the Diamond Sand-skipper Butterfly.
An information panel beside the mural explains how these insects rely on specific host plants and healthy habitats, making them indicators of environmental well-being.
The bakery commissioned the mural and received funding support through a Hindmarsh Shire Business Assistance Grant.
“Finally, after many years of procrastinating, an amazing mural has appeared on our bakery wall,” Caroline Cocks of Bow Bakery said in a message announcing the finished project, thanking Eckermann for her work and the Hindmarsh Shire Council for backing the grant.
ADVERTISING COMPETITION
To celebrate the mural’s completion, Rainbow Bakery has launched a colouring competition for primary school-aged children.
The competition runs from March 9 to 27.
Children can submit a drawing of a rainbow, the rare Mallee Bronze Azure butterfly shown in the mural, or both.
Ms Eckermann will judge the entries, and the winning artwork will appear in the front shop window throughout April.
The bakery will award the winner a prize of one dozen rainbow-coloured ‘pink’ biscuits.
Entrants should deliver their drawings to Rainbow Bakery, with their name and age written on the back of the artwork.
