Bushfire safety shelter funding boost for Laharum
Laharum Primary School is set to see a “positive” upgrade to their Shelter in Place to improve the safety of the infrastructure.

LAHARUM Primary School is set to see a “positive” upgrade to their Shelter in Place to improve the safety of the infrastructure.
The school was allocated a total of $75,000 for high priority maintenance works on the school’s Shelter in Place building.
A Shelter in Place is a building on a school site that provides a last resort temporary sheltering option against the hazards and threats most likely to impact the school.
Laharum Primary School principal Jane McLean said the school was a registered Bushfire School and must have compliance with building conditions for a Shelter in Place.
“The Victorian School Building Authority shall manage the project and upgrade the building to code standard,” she said.
“The building was assessed last year, with the age of the building certain aspects need to be upgraded.
“The impact of works will not disrupt the education of our students as the Shelter in Place building is not the main classroom.”
Ms McLean said time frames had not been communicated at this stage for when the works would proceed.
“It is positive to have our Shelter in Place building upgraded for emergency management if the situation arose,” she said.
Laharum Primary School is one of 57 schools across the state who would share in $5.8M of Planned Maintenance Program funding.
Member for Western Victoria Jaala Pulford said every Victorian student deserved to have access to the best learning environment, no matter where they live.
“This investment builds on our reputation as the Education State and ensures existing infrastructure at Laharum Primary School is safe, modern and maintained,” she said.
